Hazard Recognition Methods - Two is better Than One!

There are more than a thousand different types of industrial sectors. Hence, there is no doubt that there are a variety of hazard recognition methods. The bottom line is that the more we know about hazard recognition, the better our chances of locating, assessing and finally eliminating those hazards. Ideally, every organizational owner must adopt and employ every single method of hazard recognition, in order to ensure the safety and health of the workers and employees.

There are primarily seven different types of occupational hazard recognition methods. We need to be aware of these methods, for if one method does not detect a hazard, another one surely will:

The following list highlights some of the most useful occupational hazard recognition methods:
  1. Pre-Use Analysis: This can be applied before any new device, instrumentation, personal protective equipment, machine, tool and plant facility is used.

  2. Work Permitting: This is issued before the task, job or activity is conducted or implemented.

  3. Multi-Step Planning Process: This is applied before any form of hazard exposure and is always applied to every task, activity and job.

  4. Safety Patrol: This can be carried out by every employee in the plant site, not only by the operators or managers who are in charge of safety and health matters.

  5. Equipment Inspections: This hazard recognition method is implemented to any type of equipment before it is either used or put into operation.

  6. Walk through Safety and Health Audits: These audits must be conducted on a regular basis.

  7. Suggestion Method: Every employee or worker must always be encouraged to offer their suggestions, on how they can boost the level of safety at the work site.
